As the son of former Northen Transvaal flanker Louis Schmidt , rugby was always going to be in Uli Schmidt’s blood. His provincial career stretched over eleven seasons (1983 - 1993) as he represented the Springboks in 17 tests - the majority after South Africa’s sporting isolation. The popular hooker enjoyed a physical confrontation and was therefore nicknamed “Uli Boelie”, but was still loved and cherished by all South African rugby fans.
